Listed below are some common safety issues found in Churches and places of work. Most of these tips are easy and free to put into place immediately. They are not listed in any specific order but are a useful starting point for anyone reviewing the safety of their premises.
- Storing items at height: Store items below shoulder height to prevent things falling onto people.
- Stacking chairs: Chairs should not be stacked too high, otherwise they might topple and cause injury.
- Trailing cables: Take care that trailing cables are not a trip hazard. Use gaffer tape or cable protectors where needed.
- Cleaning chemicals: Keep cleaning chemicals and other hazardous substances in a locked cupboard out of reach.
- Equipment storage: Certain equipment such as lawnmowers, ladders and maintenance tools must be maintained and stored securely.
- Wet floors: Wet flooring can be slippery — display a warning sign when floors are wet (such as the free-standing signs used in supermarkets).
- Lighting: Ensure that lighting is adequate throughout the building, including emergency lighting in key areas.
- Emergency exits: Always make sure that exits and fire exits are clear of obstructions at all times.
- Fire doors: Don't prop open self-closing fire doors. Never use fire extinguishers to hold open any doors.
This is just a starting point — you are likely to find many other issues during your Risk Assessment. You may already be aware of specific issues in your own building. The important thing is to identify them and take action.
